ABOUT US

The Lycée was founded in San Francisco in 1967 by a group of French parents and teachers to provide a total immersion French education program adhering to the highly respected curriculum of France's national education system. In 1986, The French School of Marin merged with the Lycée, adding a Marin County campus with preschool through 5th grade in Corte Madera. In 1995, The Lycée Français La Pérouse purchased the building at 755 Ashbury Street in San Francisco, where we now have our administrative headquarters and offer preschool through 12th grade. This year we added a new campus on Ortega Street in the former location of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, a beautiful historic building. In the fall of 2007 the Ortega Campus will become Middle and High School for the Lycée. There are currently 835 students enrolled including our Marin and San Francisco campuses. The Lycée Français La Pérouse is fully accredited in the U.S by C.A.I.S. and W.A.S.C. Our students earn an American high school diploma, as well as prepare for the French Baccalaureate which qualifies them to attend both North American and European universities.

The Lycée Français La Pérouse provides the children of internationally-minded Bay Area families with a rigorous curriculum focused on French-language immersion and academic excellence. Based on the French national system, this Preschool through 12th grade program exceeds all requirements set by both France and United States and provides full preparation for both European and North American colleges and universities.

The diverse and international nature of the students and faculty fosters a spirit of community and prepares students to be global citizens.

OUR VALUES ARE:

  • We teach our students how to learn, and instill a lifelong desire for knowledge
  • We base our approach on the academic rigor of the French program, which develops a student's ability to think critically
  • We emphasize each student self-respect and respect for others
  • We recognize each student as a unique individual, and support him or her in forging a sense of self and identity
  • We strongly encourage student initiative-a vital part of a young person's developing sense of autonomy

HOW OUR LANGUAGE IMMERSION PROGRAM WORKS:

  • Teaches children to be functionally bilingual because the adopted language is the medium as well as the object of instruction.
  • Provides a meaningful social context in which children play, communicate and express themselves naturally in both languages.
  • Fosters high academic achievement by combining the improved cognitive abilities associated with bilingualism, and the maturity and ease that come from exploring cultural differences.
  • Offers our children the widest view with which to meet a rapidly changing world.

True to its founding principles, the Lycée strives to maintain an international community of teachers, parents and students of diverse social and cultural backgrounds. The school strongly encourages the active participation and involvement of its parents and staff in all aspects of the school's life.

Students from the Corte Madera campus automatically continue their studies at the Lycée Français La Pérouse, in our campus in San Francisco after 5th grade to continue their bilingual education. Students have a choice of two challenging and prestigious degree options, in addition to an American diploma - the French Baccalaureate or the French Baccalaureate with the International Option (OIB).

The Lycée Web site contains information on the school's history, its curriculum (developed by the French Ministry of Education), photos, video clips from the DVD available to applicants, extracurricular activities, answers to those frequently asked questions and all necessary documents to complete the pre-enrollment procedure.

If you would like to visit our campuses, you may attend one of the Open Houses offered throughout the year (see calendar). To ensure space in these limited group events, please reserve in advance by mail, email, fax or telephone.

You are invited to return the Application for Admission either before or after your visit to the school. If your application meets our admissions' criteria (i.e. age, availability, language ability, etc.), we will be happy to meet with you and your child to further discuss possibilities for entrance in the Lycée. The Admissions Office remains available to help you learn more about the school, its culture, teachers and staff, right up to the first day of school.

Lycée Français La Pérouse is a unique opportunity for children to share different cultures and languages, from as early as age 3, and to take advantage of the excellence of a French education within an American multicultural setting.
